Android Versus iOS, which is better or which sucks...
The short answer, for those with ADD, they both suck. For the rest of you… Each of these mobile operating systems suck in their own unique ways.   One problem with Android is that everything seems like a beta, unfinished.  On the plus side for iOS, most applications and UI feel like a finished product. But when it comes to iOS, it’s Apples way or the highway.  If you want to share...

Are you a tool?
It’s no mystery that I am huge fan of mobile computing.  I am a bigger fan of the potential in geolocation.  But I am pretty disappointed with the current offering of geo aware applications like Foursquare and others. Here is my problem with the current lineup, they make it an effort on my part to use them. When it comes to technology I have a little saying “You are either the tool,...

Picking up where McNealy left off.
There are two schools of thought when it comes to mobile devices.   First is the popular one right now, though it’s limitations are becoming apparent.  This is the Apple School of thought.  This consists of a three tiered solution beginning with your semi-portable laptop or desktop home/office computer as your hub.  You have a tablet as your around the house/office portable. Finally you...

Advertising is causing technology to fail
Mobile devices are becoming nearly ubiquitous.  But why do I need an intermediary to share my data?   Bluetooth seems like a perfect solution.  Short range, but not too short.  Devices are paired so a random Bluetooth device doesn’t get access to my device without permission.  Plenty of bandwidth to send data fast.  Best of all, it is on nearly every mobile device. The problem is that if I...

As Simple as a Stick Pin
My wife is always complaining to me about technology, “I just want it to work.” Why developers can’t get a grip on good UI baffles me. A good example of UI’s that work and fail for an everyday thing such as looking at the weather radar. Bad UI: They know my location, why make it hard for me to find? Good UI: Weatherbug on the iPad simple puts a stick pin in my...

Is Yahoo! Killing the Cloud?
I have been a big proponent of “cloud” computing.  Put everything in the cloud, let them worry about backups, service levels, and security.  The added benefit is that it makes me somewhat platform independent. But Yahoo! and to some extent Google, is killing it for me.  I love services like delicious and flickr, but with Yahoo! collapsing in on itself, I worry about continuing to use...

Location aware craze
I see a ton of potential in location aware applications.  Two disparate schools of thought exist in the design of these applications.   First is the more popular of the two, the Foursquare model.  This model consists of an individual physically checking-in when they arrive at a location.  If an individual forgets about it (as I often do), then no check-in occurs and your friends are none the...

iPad Mail Flaw
I have a serious love hate relationship with Apple. I finally conceded that in order for the iPad to work without everything feeling like a hack I would need to embrace Apple’s way of doing everything.  Fine. Unfortunately I have found a big hole in the Apple mail system. The iPad does not sync your mail filters or smart folders.  Doh! First, I admit I am probably not a typical user, but...

Must have iPad apps
The more I use my iPad the more I love it and the more I hate it.  Well hate it is a strong word. The iPad has shown that a niche exists for a slate tablet.  It has also proved that a full blown OS designed for point and click instead of touch is not a viable solution. If you have the right mix of apps, the iPad is a suitable 90% solution for most use cases.  It doesn’t replace large scale...

Single word tags are delicious
It’s been a while since I have used delicious.com for saving bookmarks.  It has been a while for a number of reasons.  First I worry about Yahoo!’s commitment to the product (or any product for that matter). Another was the departure of Leslie Orchard for Mozilla (I know, it’s been that long). Finally, and I can’t lie about this, I am a Google fan boy and had a lot of...
